Watson's Life After Hermione Granger
When audiences think of actors as characters, much as we think of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Spider-Man films, it is often hard for us to think of them in other roles. It does not matter if they have been in other memorable roles; to us, they will always be who they portrayed for a good portion of their career. So what does that mean for Emma Watson...
Emma Watson stated that her role as Hermione Granger, no matter how important it may be, is not going to be all that she will be remembered for. It seems, in fact, that she does not want to be remembered as being glamorous at all. It has been reported that she shows up at interviews by herself, saying that she “prefers to feel like [she is] handing the questions” on her own, versus the clichéd celebrities who appear with a flock of admirers. She even appears relaxed, wearing comfortable clothing and not putting on any make-up beforehand, versus the celebrities who often look as if they spent hours getting ready for a two minute interview.
She also appears to answer questions honestly, as seen in the popular articles of the sorts of boys she is interested in. Another example of her honesty can be seen when she talks about kissing Rupert Grint in the next film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. She replies, “Kissing Rupert is going to be sooo awkward,” as opposed to saying that it will be easy, or dodging the question altogether. She is willing to answer hard questions, although when telling some reporters this, she appears to swallow her own words.
As for acting, Watson is the only of Grint, Radcliffe, and herself who has not expanded her acting career to perform in another film or play. Grint was in the recent film, Driving Lessons, in which he drives a retired actress (ironically, Julie Walters, who plays Mrs. Weasley in the Harry Potter films) as a part of his job. Radcliffe was in the popular play Equus, in which he appeared nude. However, she seems to be intent on expanding her character beyond simply Hermione Granger.
That being said, the actress and the character seem to have quite a lot in common. “We're both feminists, we're both very stubborn, both very determined and quite loyal. If I have a friend then I stay through to the end,” says Watson. She also went on to admit that she was “a bit geeky” and that she loves school, as does Hermione Granger. However, it has been quite often reported that she wants to broaden her horizons. Fans know that Watson intends on studying at Cambridge University, and she would like to continue acting as soon as she finishes her studies. Still, it is clear that the character of Hermione has become an integral part of Watson’s life.
Watson states that, “It's quite hard to imagine my life without Harry Potter; it's sort of hard to remember my life before. It's sort of completely taken over my life. I say that, but I've worked hard to make sure that hasn't happened. While obviously it's a huge part of me, it doesn't define me… It feels strange that one day it will be over. In a way though I feel it will never be over... The books will always be loved and the films will come on every Christmas and it'll keep living on in kids' imaginations and adults' imaginations for many years to come.”
